Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, or Fort Mose, was the first legally
sanctioned community of freed slaves in what is now the United States. The fort is
located on the eastern edge of the marsh, two miles north of St. Augustine Florida. Today
the site is becoming better known due to public efforts aimed at promoting African
American Heritage.
This web page will be dedicated to the story of how Fort Mose came to be rediscovered
by an amateur historian and to the accurate presentation of historical facts.
Our first piece contains an account of the burning of Fort Mose during the
Patriot War in 1812.
